Red Devils Aprilia’s Leon Haslam just missed out on his second-ever World Superbike pole position as former team-mate Jonathan Rea denied him by just 0.011s at the end of today’s Superpole session.

Haslam, who took his only qualifying top spot at Phillip Island in 2010, was enjoying a half-second lead at the top of the timesheets until Rea pushed his Kawasaki past but the ever-pragmatic Derby man is looking forward to a scrap tomorrow.

“In the first lap with a qualifier I may have been a bit overly cautious, whereas in the second one I made a small mistake. In any case, in terms of race pace we are doing well as we did some good work in free practice four,” said Haslam.

“The guys at Aprilia have done a great job and the RSV4 adapted quickly to the new track and hopefully we will have another good battle like Australia.”
